Ransomware can block access to systems or encrypt data. Security software may detect known files, suspicious activity, or malicious sites, but no product can replace updates, account security, and recoverable backups.
Reduce the opportunity
- Install operating-system, browser, application, and firmware updates.
- Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication, especially for email and remote access.
- Be cautious with unexpected attachments, shared files, installers, and support requests.
Make backups resilient
Maintain multiple versioned copies, including one that an ordinary signed-in device cannot rewrite or delete. Test sample restores and protect backup administration with separate credentials.
Respond to warning signs
If files change unexpectedly or a ransom note appears, disconnect affected devices from networks and removable storage, preserve the available evidence, and seek qualified help. Verify that systems are clean before restoring known-good data.
